ToggleWhat is Industrial Edge Computing?
A set of technologies to enable computing processing capabilities as close as possible to the source of data, reducing the need for network connectivity to act upon the events happening on the field.
Advantage of using Edge Computing in Industry
As organization seek to improve their operation and reduce risks associated, the need to gather, process and respond to greater detail of telemetry increases. The traditional telemetry architectures, with centralized event management generate a bottle neck to the process improvements. Thus, a new architecture must be consider to handle the volumens of data while providing the capabilities of the old architecture along with new features such as AI. Industrial Edge Computing is the key component of these new approach.
How is Edge Computing used in industrial Automation?
Industrial Edge Computing provide the capabilities manage the incremental load of telemetry, process the incoming event in near real-time and respond on site without the need of expensive and unreliable network connectivity. This is particularly important in environments with limited or inconsistent connectivity or where near real-time response is critical.
How is Edge Computing deployed?
The typical deployment consists of edge computing devices, typically micro form-factor servers with roughed casing that can be deployed near the assets. These devices must be manufactured to support high temperature variation, vibration and other environmental conditions typical server configuration cannot handle. The edge devices then connect to a central processing service, usually an IIoT Platform to send and receive data and configuration. The following architecture diagram shows a typical deployment strategy using Azure IIoT platform.
Commonly Asked Questions about Industrial Edge Computing
A set of technologies to enable computing processing capabilities as close as possible to the source of data, reducing the need for network connectivity to act upon the events happening on the field.
Though Industrial Edge computing can be implemented in traditional telemetry scenarios to improve processing capabilities of the existing SCADA solutions in place, the most common implementation takes advantage of the latest IIoT technologies and solution patterns to enhance the operation and improve performance, reliability and security.
Providing the computing power to process events locally and make smart decisions through the use of advance Event Management and AI, Industrial Edge Computing is a Key component of any modern Manage by Exception approach.
